Josh Kyle and Emma Gilmartin at the Paris Cat Jazz Club, March 19, 2021

I am grateful for the new freedoms we now enjoy after the horror of 2020. And one of those freedoms is to be able to hear live music - specifically - jazz, in the intimate and welcoming atmosphere of the Paris Cat Jazz Club.

I have heard Josh and Emma perform with the quintet before, and it was great to hear such timeless material performed again. Josh began with 4 solo pieces, including You Don't Know What Love Is, and Sea Journey by Chick Corea, where he demonstrated an impressive and evocative vocal range, with both passion and delicacy. Emma also performed several solo songs, including You Go To My Head, and I was again blown away by her expressive and lyrical voice, where musicality and story-telling came together so effectively.

The duet Stolen Moments was a highlight for me, with a beautiful blending of voices. Special mention must be made of the 3 instrumentalists - Frank Di Sario - bass, Danny Farrugia - drums and Craig Fermanis - guitar, who provided solid, yet spacious support for the vocalists. Fermanis played expressive melodic lines, as well as some very tasty chords, and a great funky groove under You Go To My Head.

I could have listened to Emma and Josh scatting and riffing for many hours, but alas, the show was over far too soon. Hopefully this talented quintet will return in the near future. . What a joyful and uplifting experience. Brava/ Bravo.
